UMass Lowell – Esri ArcGIS Indoors Pilot Project

Document

UMass Lowell 1UMass Lowell (UML) is a national research university with over 18,000 students and 1,800 faculty members. Their 142-acre campus includes 3+ million square feet of facilities spread over 70+ structures. The ability to schedule, maintain, operate and track assets can be a daunting task.

In order to better support asset management and workplace operations, LandTech proposed implementing the Esri ArcGIS Indoors solution to provide a visual interface for use enterprise-wide. UML and LandTech successfully embarked on a pilot project to evaluate the mapping system, benefits and feasibility of the ArcGIS Indoors solution.

Implementation

UMass Lowell 2A campus building housing a combination of classrooms, labs, offices and meeting rooms served as the pilot project location for the ArcGIS Indoors implementation. LandTech began with a BIM model that had been created for the building three years prior and converted it into the ArcGIS Indoors database in both 2D and 3D. From the data set created, multiple Esri applications were developed for use targeting asset and facility management, planning and scheduling, operations, security and wayfinding. These applications were integrated into a visual solution with full GIS functionality to more efficiently direct users to the desired asset with the ability to link outside data sources and platforms as well.

Results

UMass Lowell 3UML was extremely impressed with LandTech’s implementation and integration of ArcGIS Indoors. The solution provides a central digital repository with a visual interface that can be accessed both in the offices and remotely in the field. The solution can also be scaled enterprise-wide with controlled access for individual stakeholders. Planning, operations, scheduling, maintenance, security, faculty and students all have access to information critical to their specific needs in a single solution for smart building management. The ability to integrate UML’s other campus platform solutions, including TRIRIGA, ServiceNow, 25Live and Automated Logic, was key in providing a successful outcome for this pilot project.

“LandTech’s implementation of the ArcGIS Indoors platform is a great solution to enhance our enterprise operations. The solution allows for interoperability and integration with our existing software solutions which will give us a one-stop-shop solution in the future.” – Peter Brigham, Associate Director, Planning & FIS at University of Massachusetts Lowell
