Route 24 Bridge over Canton Street - Randolph, MA

Challenge

Project teams needed accurate, comprehensive existing-conditions data to support planning and design for the Route 24 Bridge over Canton Street. The scope required documenting all visible features within the bridge footprint, as well as the surrounding transportation infrastructure.

To provide a complete context for future work, the survey area extended one-half mile in both directions along Route 24 and 500 feet along Canton Street, including roadways, sidewalks, and adjacent features. All data collection needed to be completed without lane closures, minimizing traffic disruption on this heavily traveled corridor while still meeting MassDOT standards.

Solution

LandTech carefully planned and executed fieldwork using advanced laser scanning technology, with all scanning performed exclusively from roadway shoulders along Route 24 and Canton Street. This approach eliminated the need for lane closures and improved overall site safety.

High-resolution point-cloud data was captured to create detailed three-dimensional representations of all visible features within the project area. The data was processed and refined into optimized digital files, then converted into traditional survey base plans and bridge plans fully compliant with MassDOT requirements.

Results

  • Documented bridge and roadway conditions across an expanded project area to support future design and construction
  • Completed all data collection without lane closures, minimizing traffic impacts
  • Delivered accurate, MassDOT-compliant survey base plans and bridge plans
  • Reduced the need for repeat site visits by enabling office-based data review and verification

The resulting documentation provided project stakeholders with reliable, precise information to support engineering analysis, design development, and long-term planning.
