Challenge

In 2024, Maryland introduced legislation calling for standardized, shareable digital school maps to improve safety and emergency response.

At the same time, AACPS’s Planning, Design & Construction group wanted to modernize planning workflows and reporting—without inflating project budgets.

AACPS’s objective was to transform decades of CAD and PDF floor‑plans into a live, GIS‑ready system without breaking the budget.

Solution

Esri recommended LandTech to guide an ArcGIS Indoors implementation. Working side‑by‑side with AACPS, we:

  • Converted four representative schools into the Indoors data model, aligning geometry and attributes to district standards.
  • Extended the schema with standardized use codes and domains for instant, portfolio‑wide reporting.
  • Deployed web dashboards and mobile apps that let staff answer “How many Pre-K classrooms do we have in each school?” or “Where do we have cafeterias over 20,000 sq ft for the upcoming event?” or “How big is our average Core Classroom?” in seconds and share live maps with security partners.

A phased approach delivered quick wins and a repeatable process for the remaining facilities.
