Fitchburg State University Track and Field Survey

Challenge

Our LandTech team was engaged to perform a comprehensive laser scan and existing conditions survey of the university’s outdoor track and field facility. The project supported upcoming planning and design efforts for potential upgrades and improvements to the athletic complex.

Accurate documentation of the facility—including track geometry, field event areas, surrounding infrastructure, and adjacent site features—was required to provide engineers and designers with a reliable base for analysis and future design work.

Solution

By utilizing high-definition terrestrial laser scanning, we were able to rapidly capture the entire facility and surrounding areas including documentation of bleachers, fencing, lighting, and adjacent walkways.  LandTech also provided high-accuracy survey control to ensure reliable measurements.  

Once the point cloud was registered and processed, generation of base mapping and existing conditions documentation was completed.  By collecting millions of data pointsduring the scanning process, a highly detailed digital record of the facility was able to be provided.

Results

The scanning effort provided the design team with a precise, comprehensive understanding of the existing facility.  Key benefits included: reduced field verification time, improved design accuracy, better coordination for future upgrades and apermanent digital record of the athletic facility.  

By leveraging laser scanning technology, Fitchburg State University gained accurate documentation of the track and field complex while minimizing disruption to campus operations.
