TF Green Tracks and Parking Garage - Warwick, Rhode Island

Challenge

Surveying approximately 4.5 miles of active rail leading into and out of T.F. Green Airport Station required detailed documentation of track geometry, overhead catenary systems, and adjacent infrastructure. The scope also included complex interior and structural surveying of the station parking garage, the interlink connecting the garage to the station, and the garage façade.

All work needed to be completed while the rail system remained fully energized and operational. The T.F. Green Airport Station extends the MBTA Commuter Rail Providence/Stoughton Line from Boston and serves daily commuters traveling between Providence and Boston, as well as airport passengers and employees. Traditional surveying methods would have required track outages or close-proximity measurements, creating safety and operational challenges.

Solution

LandTech utilized advanced laser scanning technology to complete the survey during normal daytime operations without interrupting rail service. This approach eliminated the need for track outages and significantly improved site safety.

Laser scanning enabled efficient, high-accuracy capture of critical overhead catenary data that would have been difficult or hazardous to obtain using conventional methods. The team collected precise elevations and locations of poles, feeder wires, and messenger wires, along with detailed measurements of pole dimensions and overall structural geometry.

Results

  • Surveyed approximately 4.5 miles of active rail corridor without disrupting operations
  • Safely captured detailed overhead catenary system data under live conditions
  • Documented complex interior and structural conditions of the parking garage and station interlink
  • Delivered comprehensive existing-conditions plans and a highly accurate 3D Revit model to support design coordination

With accurate, coordinated data established early, the design team was able to proceed with improved visualization, reduced uncertainty, and more effective coordination.
