Existing Conditions Survey for the Pawtucket-Central Falls MBTA Station

Challenge

Proposed rail enhancements along the shared Amtrak and MBTA Providence–Stoughton Commuter Rail Line required accurate existing-conditions data along more than one mile of active railroad. The work also supported development of the Pawtucket/Central Falls MBTA Station, an intermodal hub connecting commuter rail service with RIPTA bus routes.

Surveying needed to capture track and overhead catenary features safely, without disrupting live rail operations.

Solution

LandTech surveyed over one mile of active rail corridor using laser scanning technology, allowing data collection during daytime hours while trains remained in service.

Laser scanning enabled efficient capture of overhead catenary infrastructure that would have been difficult to document using traditional methods. The team collected precise elevations and locations for the top of pole, feeder and messenger wires, as well as the overall pole dimensions and structural shape.

Results

  • Safely surveyed over one mile of active railroad without service interruptions
  • Captured comprehensive overhead catenary and structural data
  • Delivered complete existing-conditions plans to support rail and station design
  • Supported development of the Pawtucket/Central Falls Station, operational in January 2023
